how to see notification history on mac

a banner slid in, you glanced at it, and it vanished. on a mac, the closest thing to notification history is, in our read, notification center, where apple says you can catch up on notifications you missed. this guide covers how to open it, how to read and clear what is there, and which settings decide whether an app's alerts are listed at all. the mac steps come from apple's mac user guide for macos 27, as of october 2026, read on october 28, 2026.

download remynd for mac for messages you opened and read in a window you had in focus.

how do you open notification center on a mac?

open it from the date and time in the menu bar, or with a two-finger swipe left that starts at the trackpad's right edge. apple's notification center guide gives both routes.

to close it, click the desktop, click the date and time again, or swipe two fingers right toward the trackpad's right edge.

how do you read missed notifications?

to read missed notifications, move the pointer over one in notification center, then use these documented actions. to clear notifications, use the last two:

  • expand a stack. if an app's notifications are grouped, click the top one to show all of them, and click show less to collapse.
  • open the item. click the notification to open it in the app.
  • see details. if an arrow appears to the right of the app name, click it to show details in the notification.
  • clear one. click the close button on that notification.
  • clear a stack. hold the pointer over the top notification in the stack, then click clear all.

in our view, opening the item in its app is the safest move, because the app usually keeps the full message or event after the alert is gone.

why are some notifications not in notification center?

your notification settings decide which alerts are listed there. choose apple menu, system settings, then notifications, per apple's notifications settings page. each app has its own options, and apple says they vary by app.

settingwhat apple's guide sayswhy it matters for finding an alert

apple's guide to viewing app notifications adds that muted notifications aren't shown and don't play a sound when they arrive. a focus, such as do not disturb or work, can also silence all notifications or allow only certain ones.

what if the notification came from slack or a chat app?

search the app that sent the notification itself. notification center shows the alert, but in our read the conversation lives in the app that sent it. for slack, slack's search guide covers command g on a mac, and we cover operators for slack and other apps in which app did i see it in.

how much time goes into searching for information?

a lot, according to microsoft's 2023 work trend index, published may 9, 2023. it surveyed 31,000 people in 31 markets. 62% said they struggle with too much time spent searching for information, and 86% wanted ai to help them find the information and answers they need. it also found 68% of people lack enough uninterrupted focus time, which in our view is when a passing banner is easiest to miss.

where does remynd fit?

remynd records your screen on a mac, runs ocr locally with apple vision, and keeps the searchable index on your mac. text comes from the focused window only, and video covers windows you have not excluded.

private browser windows are excluded by default, and you can exclude apps and sites. press control space, search in plain language, refine by app, date or source, and jump to an exact moment, such as when a message was open in its app, provided remynd was running then and the window was not excluded. it needs macos 14 or later on an apple silicon mac, and it is free to download.

in our view, it is a fallback for things you opened and read, not a log of every banner.

limits of this guide

  • it follows apple's mac user guide as published for current macos; menu names can differ on older versions.
  • apple's pages we used do not say how long notification center keeps notifications, so we make no claim about it.
  • it covers the mac only, not iphone or ipad notification settings.

download remynd for mac and search what you read in focus, after the banner is gone.

common questions

where is notification history on a mac? +
in notification center. open it from the date and time in the menu bar, or with a two-finger swipe left that starts at the trackpad's right edge, then scroll your notifications.
why is an app missing from notification center? +
check its alert style in system settings, notifications. apple lists notification center as one of the places you can choose for an app's notifications, so an app without it selected may not be listed there, in our read.
can i get back a notification i cleared? +
apple's guide describes clearing a notification but, in our read, no way to restore one. open the app that sent it instead, since the message or event usually lives there.
how do i keep notifications on screen until i dismiss them? +
in notifications settings, pick the persistent style for that app. apple says persistent notifications remain until you dismiss them, while temporary ones disappear after a while.
what if i cleared it and the app no longer has it? +
if you saw it on your mac, a screen history tool that indexed that window is one fallback, provided it was running at the time and the window was not excluded.
