is deepseek v4.1 flash 1017 good for coding?
as of october 2026, yes, for cheap background coding work, with two catches. deepseek shipped deepseek v4.1 flash 1017 on october 17, 2026 behind the same deepseek-flash model name, at the same api price. on the table in its model card, it improves on the september flash on every benchmark listed. the catches: it trails the current frontier on terminal work, and deepseek's privacy policy places personal data in china.
our verdict: in our view, use it as the cheap worker in claude code or codex for tests and refactors. keep claude opus 5.5 or gpt-6 astra for the hard calls.

what changed in deepseek v4.1 flash 1017?
deepseek's model card calls 1017 a minor update to deepseek v4.1 flash, which the changelog dates to september 10, 2026. the same changelog says the website and app moved to the new version too, and that api calls and pricing are unchanged.
you do not change any code. you keep calling deepseek-flash. the api docs say the legacy v4 flash model names are still accepted, but their requests are now served by 1017 and billed at the flash price.
deepseek also says the update cuts task run time and output length, which it frames as faster, cheaper tasks. that is the vendor's claim. we have not measured it.
the weights are on hugging face under the mit license. the base v4.1 flash card lists 552b backbone parameters, with 8b active per token during prefill and 16b during decode. in our view, that makes the api the realistic path for most people, and self hosting a job for a team with server hardware.
how does it score on coding benchmarks?
deepseek reports clear gains over the september flash, but its closed rivals are last generation: gpt-5.6 sol and opus 5, next to the open models k3 and glm-5.3. the 1017 card shows terminal-bench 4.0 rising from 31.2 to 42.3, run in the claude code harness, and deepswe v1.1 rising from 74.2 to 77.0, run in the mini swe v2 harness.
look at the columns, though. the rivals are gpt-5.6 sol, opus 5, k3 and glm-5.3. there is no gpt-6 or claude 5.5 column.
that gap matters on terminal work. deepseek's table gives opus 5 a terminal-bench 4.0 score of 51.8. anthropic's opus 5.5 launch page says the public leaderboard reports that same figure for opus 5 in the claude code harness, and it reports 66.4% for opus 5.5 at xhigh effort on anthropic's own setup. different setups, so treat the gap as rough. it is not small.
what the table does and does not say:
- repo issue fixing (deepswe v1.1): 1017 posts the top score in deepseek's own table.
- long terminal tasks (terminal-bench 4.0): 1017 beats gpt-5.6 sol in that table but trails opus 5.
- building a repo from a spec: opus 5 still leads 1017 on programbench and nl2repo-bench in the same table.
- who ran it: every number above is vendor reported. no independent leaderboard result for 1017 was in the sources we checked.

how much does deepseek v4.1 flash cost compared with gpt-6 luna and claude haiku 5.5?
per token, deepseek-flash costs more than gpt-6 luna or claude haiku 5.5 at list price, even off peak. the exception is cached input, where deepseek charges less than either.
| model and tier | input per 1m tokens (deepseek: cache miss) | cached input | output |
|---|---|---|---|
| deepseek-flash, off peak | $0.15 | $0.003 | $0.60 |
| deepseek-flash, peak | $0.30 | $0.006 | $1.20 |
| gpt-6 luna, standard, short context | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
| claude haiku 5.5, prompts up to 100k tokens | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |

deepseek's peak hours are 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 utc, monday through friday, excluding chinese public holidays. everything else is off peak, weekends included. in new york, while daylight time lasts, that is 9 pm to midnight and 2 am to 6 am, from sunday night through friday morning. a us workday runs at the off peak rate, but an overnight batch job can land in peak hours.
cached input is where a coding agent can come out ahead. agents reread the same files and instructions on every turn, and that is the line deepseek prices lowest. whether it beats luna on your bill depends on how much your runs write. for the september grid across vendors, see our ai model pricing comparison, and for the two cheap western models head to head, claude haiku 5.5 vs gpt-6 luna.
can you use it inside claude code or codex?
yes, deepseek documents a setup for each of them. its claude code guide points claude code's anthropic base url at deepseek's anthropic endpoint, uses your deepseek api key, and sets the model slots to deepseek-flash.
one catch is easy to miss. deepseek maps model names that start with claude-opus to deepseek v4 pro, billed at the v4 pro price. names that start with claude-haiku or claude-sonnet go to deepseek-flash. if one slot in your setup still asks for opus, you pay pro rates for that slot.
the guide also sets claude code's subagent model to deepseek-flash.
for codex, deepseek publishes a setup script and says codex cli, the chatgpt desktop app and the codex ide extension share one config file, so one setup covers all three.
web search is the other line to watch. deepseek's release announcement opened its search and fetch apis to everyone. calls made through deepseek harness, claude code and codex are free for now, with billing from october 31, 2026 at 16:00 utc. after that each endpoint costs $0.75 per 1,000 calls, and the claude code guide notes that search also adds model tokens to summarize results.
is it safe to send your code to deepseek?
it depends on what is in the repo, because deepseek's own policy places personal data in china. the deepseek privacy policy, last updated february 10, 2026, covers its apps, websites, software and related services. it says deepseek collects, processes and stores personal data in the people's republic of china.
the same policy lists training and improving its models among the uses of your data. it lists opting out of training among the rights that may be available, depending on where you live. it also says it does not cover the end users of apps that developers build on its open platform. so read it as the rule for you as a user, not for your customers.
our rules, as judgement:
- start on open source code or internal tools, not a client repo;
- keep secrets, keys and customer data out of prompts;
- if the code cannot leave your company, look at hosting the mit weights yourself rather than the hosted api.

so is deepseek v4.1 flash 1017 good for coding?
for the cheap layer of a coding setup, yes, in our view. here is how we would split it:
- use 1017 if you run long background jobs, test fixes or bulk refactors, your agent rereads a lot of cached context, and deepseek's privacy policy is acceptable for that code.
- use claude opus 5.5 or gpt-6 astra if the task is a long terminal run or a hard design call, where the frontier gap shows.
- use gpt-6 luna or claude haiku 5.5 if you want the lowest list price per token or need a us vendor's data terms.
the model behind your agent will probably change again before long. the history of what you did should not.
where does remynd fit?
remynd keeps your working context when you change models. it is a mac app that captures the focused window, runs ocr locally with apple vision, and keeps the searchable index on your mac. you can exclude apps and sites, recordings are kept for 30 days by default, and its agent window runs your own claude code or codex cli.
the newest part is the journal, in early access for now. remynd writes your day down as chapters, with people and project pages and a list of open loops, and clicking a moment takes you back to that point on your screen. so when you ask what you changed in that refactor last tuesday, you search one record, not three vendors' chat logs. people who use remynd can ask to be added to early access.
