how to export rewind ai data in 2026, and what you can still recover
can you still export rewind ai data? partly. rewind's help center said it had no way to export screen recordings, so the only complete copy is the folder rewind kept on your mac, if you still have it. audio clips sat in their own folder inside it, and transcripts could be copied out from the app.
limitless data is a separate case. it lives in limitless's cloud, and limitless still lets you download transcripts, chats and audio. users in seven markets had until december 19, 2025, after which limitless said it would permanently delete their accounts and data. this guide is current as of october 2026.
what can you still export from rewind ai?
what you can recover depends on where each kind of rewind ai data lived.
| data | where it lived | how it comes out | status as of october 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| rewind screen recordings | a folder on your mac | no export; copy the whole folder | may remain if you never deleted it |
| rewind audio | a snippets folder inside it | the files themselves | may remain if you never deleted it |
| rewind transcripts | inside the rewind app | copy transcript, as text | only while the app opens them |
| limitless transcripts, chats and audio | limitless's cloud | the data exports tab | open to continuing customers |
| limitless data in the eu, uk and five other markets | limitless's cloud | exports until december 19, 2025 | set for permanent deletion after december 19, 2025 |
the short version: anything that was on your own mac may still be there, and anything in limitless's cloud follows limitless's schedule.
where did rewind store data on your mac?
rewind kept its data in one folder in your user library. its help center told users to open this path:
~/Library/Application Support/com.memoryvault.MemoryVault
to get there, in the finder choose go, then go to folder, and paste the path. rewind's own article warned that it had no supported api and that the layout could change, so treat the contents as raw data, not a format.
expect it to be large. rewind's compression faq put the average at 14 gb a month, with some users at 1 gb and others at 39 gb.
two cases change where to look:
- you moved it to an external drive. rewind's external storage guide had you copy the folder to a drive, suggested naming the drive
rewind-data, and pointed the app at it. look there. - you deleted the app but not the data. rewind's help center said dragging the app to the trash does not delete your existing recordings, and its uninstall steps listed deleting recordings as a separate, optional step. the folder may outlive the app.
what format is rewind ai data in?
rewind ai data was never built to be read by other apps. three things stand in the way.
- the screen recordings had no export. rewind's help center said "we do not yet support a way to export videos from rewind."
- the store is heavily compressed. rewind captured a frame every two seconds and claimed up to 3,750x compression. its own test set squeezed 1,302 frames from 10.5 gb of raw data to 2.8 mb.
- the database is encrypted. rewind's encryption faq says it added its own encryption on top of apple's disk encryption, to keep third party apps out of the database.
the parts rewind itself pointed you to are the audio files in the snippets folder and any transcript you copied out as text. screenpipe, one of the main alternatives, says plainly that you can't import old rewind data, and we don't know of any tool that reads rewind's encrypted database.
so for rewind ai export recordings, the honest answer is to keep the folder whole rather than hunt for a converter.
how do you export limitless data before it goes?
limitless still offers a real export, and its help article, updated september 9, 2026, gives these steps.
- open app.limitless.ai or the limitless desktop app and go to the data exports tab.
- tick include audio files if you want the recordings as well as the text.
- choose request export. you don't need to stay on the page.
- wait for the email. limitless says a long history can take 30 to 90 minutes.
- when it shows completed, download the file.
if a big export fails, limitless suggests one or two month date ranges. the article doesn't name the file format, so open what you get before you rely on it.
limitless's timeline is softer, but it is dated. outside the seven markets where the service closed, its faq says pendant support and access to old desktop and web meetings run throughout 2026. export now rather than in december.
what happens to rewind data now?
what happens to rewind data now depends on where you were and what you deleted.
- on your mac: limitless says the latest rewind update disabled all screen and audio capture from december 19, 2025. the notice says nothing about deleting the local folder.
- in limitless's cloud: continuing customers can still export and delete their data in the app. they also stopped paying: the unlimited plan, which limitless listed at $348 a year in november 2025, became free.
- in the eu, the uk, brazil, china, israel, south korea and turkey: the service ended on december 5, 2025. limitless said accounts and data would be permanently deleted after december 19, 2025, and 9to5mac reported the same deadline.
if you still have the old mac, copy the folder before you wipe or sell it. rewind's own backup advice was to zip the folder and move it to the cloud or an external drive. it also warned that two rewind databases can't be merged. the full sequence of events is in what happened to rewind ai.
how do you avoid being locked in next time?
the fix is to keep the archive on your own disk and to check that before anything goes wrong.
- know the path. if you can't say where a tool keeps your history, find out today.
- back it up yourself. apple's time machine guide asks for a drive with at least 2x your mac's storage.
- test the export. an export you have never opened is not a backup.
- read promises with a date on them. on december 3, 2025, rewind's pricing page still offered a $0 free plan that said "access your data forever." two days later the sunset was announced.
- prefer local storage. a vendor can switch off a cloud. a copy you keep on your own drive outlives the vendor.
the general version of this checklist, for any ai app, is in what happens to your data when an ai app shuts down. where people have moved since is in best rewind ai alternatives in 2026 and on the rewind ai alternatives page.
where remynd keeps your history
remynd is built on the same bet rewind made: the archive lives on your mac. it records the windows on your screen except the ones you exclude, reads text from the window you are working in with apple vision, and keeps recordings and the search index on your mac. you choose the apps and sites it never records.
cloud sync is optional. if you turn it on, recordings are encrypted on your mac before upload, to remynd's storage on a paid plan or to your own s3 bucket.
sign in, crash reports and usage analytics do reach the network, and a search phrased as a question sends only the words you typed, any filters, the date and your time zone to remynd's ai, never your history. the security page lists the rest. if remynd went away tomorrow, the recordings on your mac would still be sitting on your disk. for pendant owners weighing the same move, see remynd vs limitless.
it is free to download for apple silicon macs on macos 14 or later.
download remynd for mac and keep the archive on your side of the line.
