how do you search messages on mac?
to search messages on mac, open the messages app, click the search field at the top of the sidebar, type a word, phrase or name, and press return or pick a filter. apple says results are grouped into conversations, collaborations, links, photos, locations and documents, and you can also search for text or objects inside images.
in our read, search finds only what is still in the app. apple says that if keep messages is set to anything other than forever, conversations and their attachments are removed automatically after that time.
this guide follows apple's messages user guide for mac as of november 2026.
download the remynd desktop app to search text you saw in a focused window, by app and date.
how do you search all your messages on a mac?
you search all your messages from the search field at the top of the messages sidebar. apple's messages search guide gives these steps:
- open the messages app on your mac.
- click the search field at the top of the sidebar, or press command f, which apple's messages shortcuts page lists as search all conversations.
- choose a smart search suggestion, such as a conversation, photo or location, to jump straight to a conversation, or type what you're looking for.
- pick a filter below the search field, or press return for results.
to narrow a search, apple says to add another search term or filter. when you select a result, the transcript opens at that spot, and matching terms in a conversation are in bold.
what can you search for in messages?
messages search covers more than text. this table follows apple's search guide and shortcuts page.
| what you want | what to type or press | apple's guide |
|---|---|---|
| a word or phrase | type it, then press return | matching terms in a conversation are in bold |
| a person | their name | you can search by a person's name |
| a link, photo, location or document | a term, then a filter below the search field | results are organized by type |
| something inside a photo | a word such as car or school | search for text or objects inside an image |
| every conversation at once | command f | search all conversations |
| a conversation you deleted | control command 5, or view > recently deleted | show recently deleted messages or conversations |
why are old messages missing from search?
here are three reasons old messages can be missing, based on apple's pages:
- keep messages is set to a time limit. apple's general settings page is where you choose how long to keep conversations, and apple's delete guide says any choice other than forever removes your conversations, attachments included, automatically once that time passes. check messages > settings > general. apple says you can also set this in icloud settings.
- they were deleted. apple's delete messages guide says you can view and recover items in recently deleted for up to 30 days. after that, the messages are removed from all your devices, and after 40 days they are permanently deleted from icloud.
- they never reached this mac. apple's setup guide says to use the same apple account on every device, and to select enable messages in icloud to store your messages in icloud. apple's continuity page says "imessage and sms texts from your iphone also show up on your mac". apple's text forwarding article, published july 2, 2026, says to set up either messages in icloud or text message forwarding, and that messages in icloud keeps your entire messages history up to date across those devices.
if new messages are not arriving either, apple's troubleshooting article, published september 16, 2024, says to check its system status page for an imessage outage and make sure your mac is connected to the internet.
how do you get a deleted conversation back?
you get a deleted conversation back from recently deleted, if it is still there. apple gives these steps:
- choose view > recently deleted.
- select the conversation in the sidebar, then click recover.
apple notes that if you use messages in icloud, recovering a conversation on your mac brings it back on every device with messages in icloud turned on. any message deleted with undo send is permanently deleted.
what can't messages search find?
messages search finds messages, not what you read elsewhere. in our read, a code in an email, a link in a chat app, or a page you had open is out of its reach.
in microsoft's work trend index, published may 9, 2023, which surveyed 31,000 full-time employed or self-employed workers in 31 markets, 62% of respondents said they struggle with spending too much of their workday searching for information.
the same survey found 86% were looking for ai to help find the information and answers they need. for searching across apps, see what spotlight search cannot find.
where does remynd fit?
remynd records your screen, runs ocr locally with apple vision, and keeps a searchable index on your computer. text comes from the focused window only, and video covers windows you have not excluded.
you can exclude apps and sites, and private browser windows are excluded by default. press control space to search in plain language, refine by app, date or source, and jump to an exact moment, provided remynd was running then, the window was not excluded and, for text, it was the focused window. it needs macos 14 or later on an apple silicon mac.
limits of this guide
- it follows apple's messages user guide as we read it on the date above. in our read, menu names can differ between macos versions.
- we did not test every account type, carrier or region. apple says sms, mms and rcs availability may depend on your carrier, country, or region.
- it covers the messages app only, not other chat apps.
