is there a microsoft recall mac version? no. here is what works instead
there is no microsoft recall mac version. recall is a windows 11 feature that only runs on copilot+ pcs, and microsoft has not announced a macos release as of october 2026. apple's macos 27 adds siri ai, which can answer questions about what is on your screen right now, but apple describes no searchable timeline of what you saw yesterday. if you want recall's idea on a mac, a third party screen history app is the route.
is microsoft recall available on mac?
no, and microsoft's documentation only covers windows. the recall support page applies to windows 11, and its minimum requirements start with a copilot+ pc or a windows 11 ai+ pc that meets microsoft's secured core standard. that means an npu rated at 40 tops, 16 gb of ram and 256 gb of storage, with 50 gb free before you can turn it on.
anyone searching for microsoft recall macos should know that the copilot app is a different product. microsoft copilot has been in the mac app store since february 2025 and needs macos 14 or later. its listing describes a chat assistant and image generator. it never mentions recall, screenshots or a screen history.
recall itself saves a snapshot of your active screen every few seconds and indexes it on the pc. per microsoft's admin documentation, it sets aside 25 gb on a 256 gb drive, roughly 10% of it. microsoft also claims recall takes up to 70% less time to find a presentation, in testing it commissioned. we compare it with the old mac option in rewind ai vs recall.
why isn't recall coming to the mac?
microsoft has not said, so any answer is partly inference. what the documentation does show is that recall is assembled from windows parts.
microsoft's security architecture post from september 27, 2024 lists them:
- windows hello enhanced sign in security, which has you confirm it is you before recall opens its snapshots
- encryption keys protected by the tpm and tied to that windows hello identity
- virtualization based security enclaves, where snapshots are decrypted and queried
- bitlocker or device encryption, and pcs that meet microsoft's secured core standard
- a copilot+ npu doing the ai work on the device
macos has its own answers to some of the same problems, but none of these windows components. our reading is that a mac recall would be a new product, not a port. that matters because the security model was the hard part. microsoft rebuilt it after the june 2024 preview was shown to keep captured text in an sqlite database protected only by disk encryption. the full story is in is microsoft recall safe.
what does apple ship instead?
apple ships an assistant that sees your screen in the moment, not a recorder. that is the key distinction.
siri ai was announced on june 8, 2026, and macos 27 golden gate shipped on september 14, 2026. per apple's support page, siri ai is in beta for macs with m1 or later and the macbook neo, in english, after a waitlist. on the mac it is built into spotlight.
| apple feature | what it covers | keeps a history of your screen? |
|---|---|---|
| siri ai onscreen awareness | the content on your screen when you ask | no |
| visual intelligence | a window you select, via shift + command + space | no |
| siri ai personal context | messages, mail, photos, and apps that publish to spotlight | only what those apps stored |
| spotlight | apps, files, emails and messages | no |
| spotlight clipboard history | text and files you copied | only what you copied |
apple's spotlight guide calls it the fastest way to find anything on your mac. that is true for anything that was saved somewhere.
can siri ai or spotlight replace recall?
not for the question recall answers. siri ai handles "what is this," and recall handles "what was that."
the gap is everything you saw but never saved. a figure on a web dashboard, a slide someone shared on a call, an error in a terminal you closed. personal context reaches apple's own apps, and third party apps only when their developers integrate with spotlight. the text of a browser tab you read last tuesday is in neither.
we go deeper in apple intelligence on mac and what spotlight search can't find. the short version: apple built a present tense assistant, and a screen history is a past tense tool.
a recall alternative for mac
the mac options are third party, and they differ mostly in where the archive lives and how much setup you accept.
| app | platforms | where the history lives | status, october 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| remynd | macos 14 or later, apple silicon | on your mac | shipping, free to download |
| screenpipe | macos, windows, linux | local by default, source available | shipping, free plan, full history from $25 a month ($250 a year) |
| openrecall | windows, macos, linux | local, agpl open source | repository last updated september 24, 2025 |
| rewind | mac | was local | capture disabled december 19, 2025 |
screenpipe is the pick if you want to read the code and run the same tool on several operating systems. its pricing page keeps the free plan to recent work, with full history at $25 a month or $250 a year. our remynd vs screenpipe page compares the two.
openrecall describes itself as an open source alternative to recall and had 2,962 github stars on october 21, 2026, but its code has not been pushed to since september 2025, so check its activity before trusting it with your screen. the wider field is in open source rewind ai alternatives.
rewind belongs on this list only as a warning. its archived homepage promised years of recordings on a small drive through a 3,750x compression rate, and the company ended it with an app update. limitless, the company behind it, said in its december 2025 notice that meta had acquired it and that capture would stop on december 19, 2025.
how do you get recall style memory on a mac?
you install a screen history app, give it the screen recording permission, and set exclusions before you rely on it. the steps are the same whichever app you pick:
- check the app's requirements against your mac, since some need apple silicon or a recent macos.
- install the app and allow screen recording when macos asks. our guide to the screen recording permission explains that prompt.
- exclude the apps and sites you never want recorded, such as banking or a client portal.
- work normally, then search for a word you saw earlier to check it captures what you expect.
the verdict, as our judgement: on a copilot+ windows pc, use recall. on a mac, recall is not an option and siri ai only answers about the present, so pick a third party app by where its archive lives and whether you can leave with it.
where remynd fits
remynd is the one we build, so weigh this section accordingly. it needs apple silicon and macos 14 or later, records the windows on your screen except the apps and sites you exclude (password managers are blocked by default), reads text from the window you are working in with apple vision, and keeps recordings and the search index on your mac. control + space opens search.
when a search reads like a question, only the words you typed, any filters, the date and your time zone go to our ai to plan it, never your history.
if you connect your own agent, such as claude code or codex, whatever it reads, including screen frames unless you switch them off, goes to that company's cloud under your own account. our security page states what reaches the network, and remynd vs microsoft recall puts the two side by side.
download remynd for mac and keep the archive of what you saw on your own mac, where a vendor shutting down cannot take it with them.
