where do downloads go on mac?

downloads go to the downloads folder on a mac by default, which sits in the dock. apple's dock guide says that folder is where internet downloads go by default. in our read, if a file is not there, the browser was likely set to save somewhere else, or the file was moved.

this guide follows apple's mac user guide for macos 27, apple's safari guide and google's chrome help, as of october 2026, read on october 29, 2026.

where is the downloads folder on a mac?

the downloads folder sits in the dock by default. apple's dock folders guide says the dock comes with a downloads folder, where internet downloads land by default, along with attachments you receive and items you accept with airdrop. it can look like a blue folder marked with a download symbol, or like a stack of files.

  • open it from the dock. click the stack or folder to expand it, click any item to open it, or click open in finder to see the whole folder.
  • sort it. control-click the folder in the dock and sort what is inside by name, date added, date created or another order.

where to look depends on the app you downloaded with:

how you downloaded itwhere it goes by defaulthow to find it
safarithe file download location in safari settingsthe downloads list near the top right corner of the window
chrome/users/your username/downloads, if you didn't change itmore > downloads
an email attachment or airdropthe downloads folder, per apple's dock guidethe downloads folder in the dock

how do you find a download in safari?

open the downloads list in safari, then reveal the file. apple's safari downloads guide gives these steps:

  1. go to safari on your mac.
  2. click the show downloads button near the top right corner of the window. apple says it isn't shown if the downloads list is empty.
  3. click the magnifying glass next to the filename to find the item on your mac.

apple adds two catches. if you move a file, or change the download location, after it downloads, safari can't find it. and by default, safari removes an item from the list after one day, so in our read an older download may only show up in the folder.

two more things apple notes, and in our read either can make a download look missing:

  • safari decompresses .zip and similar files once they finish downloading, so look for the unzipped file.
  • if you download an item you already downloaded before, safari removes the older duplicate.

how do you change where safari saves downloads?

you change the safari download location in safari settings. apple's safari general settings guide says the file download location menu chooses where items you download are saved, or has safari always ask where to save them. choose safari > settings, click general, then open the file download location menu.

the same settings page has remove download list items, which sets when items leave the list.

where does chrome save downloads on a mac?

chrome saves to your downloads folder unless you changed it. google's chrome downloads help says that if you didn't change the default download location, chrome saves files to /users/your username/downloads on a mac.

  • find a download. click more > downloads at the top right, then click a file's name to open it.
  • change the location. click more > settings > downloads, then click change and pick a folder, or turn on ask where to save each file before downloading.

google adds that removing a download from that list removes it from chrome's downloads page, not from your computer.

if the file is still missing, our guide to spotlight not finding files on mac covers search, and how to recover deleted files on mac covers the trash and time machine.

how much time goes into searching for information?

a lot, according to microsoft's 2023 work trend index, published may 9, 2023. it surveyed 31,000 people in 31 markets, and 62% said they struggle with too much time spent searching for information in their workday. 86% wanted ai to help them find the information and answers they need. in our view, a lost download is a small, common version of that search.

where does remynd fit?

remynd records your screen on a mac, runs ocr locally with apple vision, and keeps the searchable index on your mac. text comes from the focused window only, and video covers windows you have not excluded.

it does not search your folders or your downloads list. what it can do is help you find the page or file you had open, by what it said.

press control space, search in plain language, refine by app, date or source, and jump to the moment, provided remynd was running then and the window was not excluded. private browser windows are excluded by default, and you can exclude apps and sites. it needs macos 14 or later on an apple silicon mac, and it is free to download.

in our view, it helps when you remember what a download said but not its name. if you are not sure where you saw something, see find something you saw on your screen.

limits of this guide

  • it follows apple's and google's guides as published in october 2026; menu names can differ on older versions.
  • it covers safari and chrome. other browsers and apps can use their own download settings, which we did not check.
  • we did not test every download type; apple says some webpage items can't be downloaded.
