where do screenshots go on mac?

screenshots go to your desktop by default on a mac, named with the date and time. you can change the save location in the options menu of the screenshot app, which opens with shift command 5, and apple says screen recordings made with the screenshot app save to the desktop by default too.

this guide follows apple's screenshot article, dated september 14, 2026, apple's icloud drive articles and the mac user guide for macos 27, all read on october 30, 2026.

where does each kind of capture end up?

the save place depends on how you took the capture. this table follows apple's screenshot article, screen recording article and the mac user guide.

how do you change where screenshots are saved?

you change where screenshots are saved in the screenshot app's options menu. apple's mac user guide gives these steps:

  1. press shift command 5 to open screenshot and show its tools. apple's screenshot article says you can use the app in macos mojave 10.14 or later, and you can also find it in the utilities folder of your applications folder.
  2. click the options pop-up menu.
  3. below save to, pick a preset location, or click other location and go to the folder you want.

apple says the same options menu also sets a timer, whether to show the floating thumbnail and the mouse pointer, and, on supported mac models using macos tahoe 26 or later, the capture format. apple's recording article says the save to choice also sets where a recording is saved after you stop recording.

what are screenshot files called?

apple's two pages word this slightly differently. the mac user guide says file names start with screenshot or screen recording plus the date and time, and that screenshots are saved as .png files and recordings as .mov files. the screenshot article gives the name screen shot [date] at [time], and the recording article gives screen recording [date] at [time].mov.

the capture format changes the file type, per apple's screenshot article: sdr saves png, and hdr saves in the heif image format.

in our view, typing screenshot, or screen shot, the other spelling apple uses, into spotlight or a finder search is a quick way to list them. apple's icloud article notes you can use spotlight to search for a file.

how do you take a screenshot without saving a file?

to skip the file, send the screenshot to the clipboard. apple's screenshot article gives two ways:

  • press control along with the other keys, for example control shift command 3.
  • control-click the screenshot thumbnail in the corner of the screen, then choose save to clipboard.

when show floating thumbnail is set, apple's user guide says you can drag the thumbnail into a document, email, note or finder window before it saves, and swiping right on it saves the file right away.

why can't you find your screenshots?

start with the save to setting, then check icloud. here are four places to check, based on apple's pages:

  • save to was changed. open the screenshot app's options menu and see which location is chosen under save to.
  • your desktop is in icloud drive. apple's desktop and documents article says that when desktop & documents folders is on, your desktop folder is stored in icloud drive. in macos tahoe 26 or later apple says you find it in icloud drive in the finder sidebar under favorites, and in earlier versions in the icloud section of the sidebar.
  • that setting was turned off. apple's turn off article says files saved to your desktop stay in icloud drive, and new desktop and documents folders are created on your mac, empty. in our read, that can make older screenshots seem to vanish.
  • it was deleted from a desktop in icloud drive. for files you keep in the desktop folder in icloud drive, apple says deleted files stay in recently deleted, in the files app or on icloud.com, for 30 days.

if a screenshot was deleted rather than moved, see how to recover deleted files on mac. for text inside a screenshot, see how to copy text from a screenshot on mac.

do people struggle to find information at work?

searching for information is a common struggle at work, by one large survey. microsoft's work trend index, published may 9, 2023, surveyed 31,000 full-time employed or self-employed people in 31 markets.

62% of respondents said they struggle with spending too much of their workday searching for information, and 86% were looking for ai to help find the information and answers they need. in our view, a screenshot is often a way of saving something you expect to look for later.

where does remynd fit?

remynd records your screen on a mac, runs ocr locally with apple vision, and keeps the searchable index on your mac. text comes from the focused window only, and video covers windows you have not excluded.

in our view, it fits the moment you meant to take a screenshot and did not.

press control space, search in plain language, refine by app, date or source, and jump to the moment, provided remynd was running then and the window was not excluded. private browser windows are excluded by default, and you can exclude apps and sites. it needs macos 14 or later on an apple silicon mac, and it is free to download.

for the wider question, see find something you saw on your screen.

limits of this guide

this guide covers apple's own screenshot tools, so a few things sit outside it.

  • it follows apple's pages as read in october 2026; we did not test older macos versions.
  • apple's articles differ on the file name; we report both rather than pick one.
  • apple says some apps might not let you take screenshots of their windows, naming the apple tv app.
  • third-party screenshot apps save wherever their own settings say, which we did not check.
