limitless vs rewind: same company, two very different products

limitless vs rewind is one company at two stages. rewind ai built a mac app that recorded your screen and kept the archive on your mac. in april 2024 the same company relaunched as limitless, with a pendant, a web app and desktop apps that stored recordings in its cloud.

meta's acquisition of limitless was announced on december 5, 2025, and the rewind app's capture was switched off on december 19, 2025. as of october 2026 you cannot buy either one, and only pendant owners outside the 7 closed regions can still record.

is limitless the same as rewind?

limitless is the company formerly called rewind ai, so the answer to "is limitless the same as rewind" is yes for the company and no for the product. 9to5mac describes the parent company, rewind ai, being renamed limitless ai, and techcrunch covered the rebrand in april 2024. "limitless formerly rewind" is the accurate way to put it.

the two products overlapped for about 20 months. rewind's pricing page still listed rewind pro in december 2025, and the 2025 limitless pricing page said its pro and unlimited plans included rewind pro. but techcrunch reported that rewind would get no new features, and that the promised windows version would not ship.

the timeline, from the companies' own pages where they survive:

  1. november 2022. rewind's homepage announced $10 million from andreessen horowitz and took early access signups for the mac app.
  2. october 2023. rewind opened pendant preorders at $59 and reported 3,272 preorders in two days.
  3. april 2024. the company relaunched as limitless: a web app, mac app, windows app and wearable, with the pendant on preorder at $99 and, per techcrunch, more than 10,000 preorders by april 17.
  4. december 5, 2025. meta's acquisition of limitless was announced. pendant sales stopped that day, and the service closed in 7 regions.
  5. december 19, 2025. a rewind update disabled all screen and audio capture.
  6. february 2026. the rewind.ai domain redirected to a domain parking service.

what did rewind and limitless each capture?

rewind captured what happened on your mac, while limitless captured conversations, mostly through a pendant and meeting recording. that is the real split in rewind ai vs limitless ai.

rewind's pitch was everything you had seen, said or heard on your computer. it recorded the screen and audio, ran ocr so the text was searchable, and let you scrub back through time. it ran on apple silicon and intel macs, and there was an iphone app.

limitless moved the center of gravity off the screen. the pendant clipped to your shirt and recorded in person conversations, with a claimed 100 hour battery life. it cost $99 on preorder and $199 once it shipped. the web and desktop apps recorded meetings without a bot joining the call, then wrote notes and summaries. the launch homepage led with meetings and the pendant, not with screen history.

what did each one do with your data?

rewind was built as a local archive, and limitless was built around a cloud. in our view, for most people deciding what to trust next, that difference matters more than any feature.

rewind's privacy policy said recordings, including screenshots, video and audio, were never sent off your mac, and that compression, speech recognition and ocr all ran locally. the exception was ai. ask rewind and meeting summaries sent text to openai, which the same policy named.

even the first pendant was pitched as local. rewind's 2023 preorder page promised "all of the recordings are stored locally on your device." the same page said the company held over $25 million in cash, which it called over six years of runway.

limitless reversed that. its launch homepage said data was encrypted and stored in the limitless confidential cloud, which it compared to end to end encryption with the added ability to run the ai while the app was closed. techcrunch framed the shift with a single line: "while rewind was largely a local product," the new cloud let users reach their data anywhere.

after the acquisition, continuing limitless customers had to accept an updated privacy policy and terms of service, and limitless added a full data export at the same time.

what still works as of october 2026?

the rewind app no longer records anything, and limitless only works for people who already own a pendant.

for rewind, the december 19, 2025 update disabled all screen and audio capture, and there is no official download any more. the limitless faq says it plainly: "the rewind app is sunsetting." the rewind.ai domain no longer belongs to the product either. in october 2026 it shows an unrelated ai tools site with its own $19 a month pro plan, and nothing sold there is the old mac app. the full story is in what happened to rewind ai.

for limitless, existing pendant customers are supported throughout 2026, and the unlimited plan is free for them. the desktop and web apps can no longer record, but past meetings stay viewable through 2026. in brazil, china, the eu, israel, south korea, turkey and the uk, the service closed on december 5, 2025, and accounts there were set for permanent deletion after december 19, 2025.

if you still have limitless transcripts, export them while the service is up. if you are trying to save old rewind data, start with how to export rewind ai data.

which should a mac user replace it with?

in our view, nothing in the limitless line replaces what rewind did on a mac. most rewind users want back a searchable record of their own screen, and that takes a mac app, not a wearable.

  • if you used rewind for screen history: pick a mac screen archive. remynd and screenpipe both run on a mac today; see screenpipe vs rewind and the rewind ai alternatives page.
  • if you used the pendant for in person conversations: a mac app cannot hear the hallway. limitless pendant alternatives covers that gap honestly.
  • if you are moving to windows: microsoft recall is built in, but it needs a copilot+ pc or windows 11 ai+ pc with a 40 tops npu, 16 gb of ram and 256 gb of storage (microsoft support).
  • if you are weighing remynd against limitless directly: the remynd vs limitless comparison covers that head to head.

the lesson we take from both. an archive that depends on a company's servers, or on its update channel, lasts exactly as long as that company's plans.

where remynd fits

remynd is a mac app for the rewind half of this story. it records your screen and reads screen text on your mac from the window you are working in, using apple vision, so the searchable index stays on your mac. recordings stay on your mac unless you turn on optional cloud sync, which encrypts them on your mac before upload.

you choose apps and sites it never records, and password managers are blocked by default. call audio is transcribed on your mac with an mlx model.

control + space opens search, which matches your history on your mac. when a search reads like a question, only the words you typed, any filters, the date and your time zone go to remynd's ai to plan the search; your history is never in that request.

the point is ownership. when the archive of what you saw lives on your own mac, a vendor shutting down cannot take it with them. remynd is free to download and runs on apple silicon with macos 14 or later.

download remynd for mac and your archive starts the day you install it.

does rewind ai still work? +
no. an update disabled all screen and audio capture in the rewind app starting december 19, 2025, two weeks after meta acquired limitless. as of october 2026 the rewind.ai domain shows an unrelated ai tools site, not the old mac app.
can i still buy a limitless pendant? +
no. limitless stopped selling the pendant on december 5, 2025. people who already own one are supported throughout 2026 and get the unlimited plan free, except in the 7 regions where the service closed.
where did rewind and limitless store my data? +
rewind kept screen and audio recordings on your mac and ran ocr and speech recognition there, sending text to openai only for ask rewind and summaries. limitless stored recordings, encrypted, in its own confidential cloud.
what is the closest thing to rewind on a mac now? +
a mac app that records your screen and keeps the archive on your own disk. remynd and screenpipe both do that today. limitless is not the answer, because it moved away from the screen archive and now sells nothing new.
