rewind ai alternative reddit threads: what people actually recommend
if you searched rewind ai alternative reddit, here is the short answer. we read 10 threads from april 2023 to march 2026, with 208 replies between them. screenmemory came up most, in 6 threads (60%), then limitless in 5, mostly as the product rewind became, and screenpipe and microsoft recall in 3 each. nobody found a full replacement, and at least 12 replies were builders recommending their own app. this is current as of october 2026.
what does reddit recommend instead of rewind?
reddit has no consensus pick, and the threads show why. here is what reddit recommends instead of rewind, counted across the 10 threads, with the reasons people gave and the complaints that followed. a tool counts once per thread, however many replies named it.
| tool | threads (of 10) | why people pick it | complaints |
|---|---|---|---|
| screenmemory | 6 | one time price, a timeline and text search, no ai to get in the way | one capture a minute by default misses things; freezes; bigger files than rewind |
| limitless | 5 | one september 2024 reply called it great | a meeting recorder, not a desktop recorder; then sold to meta |
| screenpipe | 3 | local, records every screen and mic, works with any ai provider | over $220 for the app in late 2024; an unpolished timeline; a recording icon that never goes away |
| microsoft recall | 3 | a sign the big platforms want this | windows only |
| an app named by its own builder | 3 | no user reports | all three mentions were the same builder's pitch |
| littlebird | 2 | ties meeting notes to chats; one user dropped granola for it | few reviews to go on |
| granola | 2 | meeting notes inside a bigger stack | one user dropped it for littlebird |
| retrack | 2 | none given | scam worries and a support email that bounced |
| unlost | 2 | free semantic search in 2023 | looked unmaintained by september 2024 |
| fathom and bee | 1 each | wired into notion with granola as a homemade rewind | heavier, and it takes setup |
| macwhisper | 1 | a lifetime license and automatic meeting recording | no screen history |
single mentions included timescroll, dayflow, pieces for developers, texts.com and apple intelligence. in our reading, the rewind alternative reddit pattern is plain: people replaced one rewind feature at a time.
which threads did we read?
we read each thread's public feed on october 21, 2026, quoting at most one short line from each:
- r/macapps, april 23, 2023: a free alternative, with a complaint that "there is no sane reason for them to charge any regular fee".
- r/rewindai, august 9, 2024: "this pivot to limitless is doa."
- r/macapps, september 10, 2024: the biggest, at 84 replies. a screenmemory user wrote "i don't need ai, everything i search i get!"
- r/rewindai, october 13, 2024: rewind's cofounder replied, and after the shutdown most user replies were about littlebird.
- r/macapps, november 25, 2024: searching sent messages across chat apps.
- r/rewindai, march 7, 2025: "it takes all of this to somewhat replace rewind."
- r/macapps, march 12, 2025: a short exchange about screenmemory.
- r/macapps, april 22, 2025: a screenmemory user: "i find once a minute is all i need."
- r/macapps, december 6, 2025: the day after the meta news, where a later reply was still "hoping for a real rewind alternative to emerge."
- r/remotework, march 11, 2026: "i've been looking for a replacement and nothing comes close."
why are so many reddit recommendations self promotion?
at least 12 of the 208 replies, about 6%, were builders pitching an app they made, and that skews any count. the screenmemory developer answers in several of them, three other builders replied to one 2024 thread, and one app was pasted into 3 threads on the same day in july 2026.
that is not a scandal. small developers have to find users somewhere. but a reply from the person who built the app is an ad, and a reply from someone who has used it for a year is a review. in our reading, screenmemory was the only tool that several replies, not just its developer, said they actually use. screenpipe, in our reading, drew more interest than lasting use.
what did reddit say about limitless?
some reddit users read limitless as a different product, long before meta bought it. in the september 2024 thread, one user called limitless a mass market meeting recorder, not a desktop recorder like rewind.
in october 2024, a reply signed as rewind's cofounder and ceo explained the split: "rewind is primarily local and limitless is primarily in the cloud". an earlier reply from the same account said the team was focused on what you said and heard for now, and planned to come back to what you saw.
then it ended. on december 5, 2025, limitless announced that meta had acquired it, and 9to5mac reported that the latest rewind update would disable all screen and audio capture from december 19. the full story is in what happened to rewind ai.
what do reddit users want from a rewind replacement?
in our reading, the most repeated demand is capture as frequent and as cheap on disk as rewind's. rewind's help center said it captured a frame every two seconds and that users averaged 14 gb a month, thanks to compression of up to 3,750x. commenters kept holding other apps to those numbers.
screenmemory's own faq puts an 8 hour day at about 280 mb with one capture a minute, and its developer told users that 60 seconds is the default. power users called that too slow, and lighter users said it was plenty. the other demands that kept coming up:
- no subscription. rewind pro was $29 a month, or $19 billed yearly, and one time prices win goodwill on r/macapps.
- local storage. praise for screenpipe and timescroll leaned on the data staying on the machine.
- ai, or not. some users wanted plain english questions over their history; others wanted no ai at all.
- stability. freezes that silently stop recording drew the angriest replies.
which tool should you try, based on reddit?
pick by the complaint you can live with. these verdicts are our judgement from the threads, checked against each vendor's own page in october 2026:
- try screenmemory if you want a timeline and text search for a one time price. it is $29 with a year of updates, or $39 for lifetime, and the $0 tier keeps 24 hours.
- try screenpipe if you want every screen and mic recorded and you are happy to tinker. it has a free plan and basic at $25 a month, or $250 a year (pricing), and its code is now under the screenpipe commercial license, not mit. see remynd vs screenpipe.
- try littlebird if you mostly want meeting notes linked to your work and are fine with the cloud. its site says data is encrypted on aws, with a $0 plan and a paid plan at $17 a month, billed as $204 a year.
- skip microsoft recall unless you are moving to windows. it needs a copilot+ pc with a 40 tops npu and 16 gb of ram. more in remynd vs microsoft recall.

where does remynd fit?
remynd came up in none of these 10 threads, so weigh this section as our pitch, not reddit's. it answers two of the demands above: local storage and plain english search.
recordings stay on your mac unless you turn on optional cloud sync, which encrypts them before upload. screen text is read on your mac with apple vision, and search opens with control + space. when a search reads like a question, only the words you typed, any filters, the date and your time zone go to remynd's ai to plan it. your history never goes in that request.
it is free to download, for apple silicon macs on macos 14 or later. the lesson of december 2025 applies whichever tool you pick: keep the archive on your own mac, so a vendor shutting down cannot take it with them. how that works is on the security page.
